Stand By Me
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No, I won’t be afraid
Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
Ben E. King – Stand By Me
So the singer Ben E. King died very recently, and the song he is most known for is “Stand By Me”, which is a classic in every sense of the word. While the song seems to be a love song directed at a woman from a man’s perspective, it can also be a very spiritual song as well. When you seem to be down and nothing is going right, what is more uplifting than to get someone to be there with you, and to pick you up from wherever you are?
It made me think of that time when I was in a dark funk, and feeling like life had kicked me down to the point where I was of no value to anyone. It is in those moments that we find out who we truly are, and also when we find that we are not alone. No matter what, Jesus and God are always there for us. Even when we are going through our darkest time, that is when He is there the most. He tells us 365 times in the Bible that we should not be afraid, once for every day of the year!
Here are some examples of how he shows us he is there for us.
Isaiah 41:10 – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. It is when we are in those dark moments in our lives, and they do come, that He is there to help strengthen us. This is one of the first verses that I read when I was in that dark time before I converted to Christ. I do not think that I had this verse as one of the first by accident.
Psalms 23:4 – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. This psalm is attributed to David, and it truly a strengthening psalm indeed. I think it helps us to get ready for whatever battle we may face, be it a challenge that we have for the day that we wish to overcome, or for when we truly are battling something terrible. It is almost like armor for us to put on to shield us from the trials and tribulations we face.
Psalms 27:1 – The Lord is my light and my salvation–whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid? In this psalm, we are shown that we should not fear anyone or anything, for the Lord is truly with us. As long as we put God into our lives, and first in our lives, then he will always be with us to defend us when we stumble.
Romans 8:15 – For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” This was a very powerful verse for me as I was going through my conversion, as it hit home for me. Fear is what prevents us from achieving things in our lives that we could do, if we weren’t afraid of such things as success or failure. Don’t be afraid, as He will be with you if it is part of His plan. This blog and website are a prime example to me, as I could stay comfortable and not share my thoughts, written and orally on my podcast.
Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. I like this verse because again it demonstrates how God is with you always. Whatever your ‘them’ is that you are afraid or terrified of, you should find strength in the Lord, because He is always with you.
2 Chronicles 20:15(b) – The Lord says to you: Do not fear or be displayed at the sight of this vast multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s. While this verse is about a pending battle between two armies, I do like this verse as it shows that no matter what battles we face, the battle is not ours but God’s to fight. All we have to do is to have faith.
These are just some of the verses that I find that help strengthen me based on the reassurance that He stands by me. I hope these are inspirational for you as well, and if there are other verses that inspire you and let you know that He stands by you, please let me know in the comments below!
